On August 7th, I ran the Blue Points 5k outside Panthers Stadium. It was the morning of their Fan Fest so there was also a kids' 100 meter dash. We signed Wes up for it, but he was too afraid of Sir Purr (the Panthers' mascot) to actually race. It was a bummer since 1) we paid money for him to do it, and 2) he really loves running.
As for me, my race went really well. It was a great morning temperature-wise and that makes a huge difference. The stadium is less than a mile from our house so I did a 4.5 mile loop and then headed to the stadium.
The race started at 7:30am and as we took off and headed downhill I could see all of the people in front of me running and it just gave me chills and made me smile. All of these people had decided to come out and run on their Saturday morning. Cool stuff.
The first half was downhill, but since it was a looped course (part of which I'd already run once that morning), I knew it'd have to go back up in the second half. So at least I knew what to expect, which helps. I was pleasantly surprised with my time as I passed each mile marker and I was feeling really good. I think the pre-run run actually helped me do better. My final time was 24:25 which is a pace of 7:54 min/mi. Here are my stats:
Division Place: 12 of 90
Sex Place: 49 of 430
Overall: 236 of 957
After this race I had the "I'm back" feeling even though it wasn't a PR. This past week I've still be running my usual 9:30-10:00 min/mi pace, but that's okay. I was just glad I could push it out for one race (on a great day, which helped) and feel good about what I had accomplished.
