Weekend in D.C. - Saturday

On Saturday, we headed to Mount Vernon to see where George Washington lived. The weather was great: a little chilly in the morning, but perfect with the sun out. We took our time and enjoyed it.

In the evening, we put the kids down for bed and the Broughs had a neighbor friend come over to sit with the kids while we went into the city for a night tour. First, we had dinner at a yummy Thai restaurant called Po Siam in Alexandria (I could eat yellow curry everyday, I think) and then we went to get frozen custard at The Dairy Godmother (I had pumpkin...it was delicious). After that, we did a (mostly) walking tour of the monuments at night. It was great!

On Sunday morning, we got our things together and left for Charlotte. We had a great trip and were so grateful for all of the hospitality. Unfortunately, we failed to get any pictures of Rachel and Regan or their cute son, Ethan. A special thanks to them, though, for our great weekend!

The kids running around the bowling green in front of the mansion.

A tulip poplar planted by George Washington in 1785. Isn't it amazing? Picture credits go to Brian.

We happened to be there on a "special event" day and one of the things they had going on was these 18th century games. This particular game is called "Graces". We also went on a hayride.

As we were relaxing on the Mount Vernon hillside, I decided to have Wes take a picture of Brian and me. This was his first attempt. In his defense, it was a Canon Rebel, which is quite heavy for a 3-year-old.

Not a bad second attempt. Can you tell we were looking directly into the sun? :)

Pretty Sydney with a beautiful view.

The kids running around while Brian and I relaxed. It was fabulous.

Brian and the kids testing out the chairs.

Family picture with the beautiful view.

There is a really great museum at Mount Vernon. In this picture, you can see the T-square that was used to lay the cornerstone of the Capitol Building.

Halfway through the museum, there is a hands-on area for children where they can play, color, and dress up. I think Sydney looked pretty sweet in this white dress.

Here we are representing G.W.'s family. He married a widow, Martha Custiss who had two children, Jacky and Patsy, from her previous marriage. I didn't realize that she and George never had children of their own, thus, George Washington has no blood descendants. Interesting.

Creative: Showing the President's Cabinet on display as a cabinet.

A view of Washington Memorial and the Capitol from Lincoln Memorial. Again, picture credits to Brian.

The lighting is horrible thanks to the flash, but here's the proof that we were there!

When you go to the World War II Memorial, you can look up people who served in the war. This is my Grandpa Swensen. Pretty awesome. Thanks for serving for our freedom, Grandpa! (Brian's grandpas both served our country as well...a heartfelt thanks to them also. We're lucky kids.)

The WWII Memorial all lit up. It's really beautiful.

Weekend in D.C. - Friday

On Friday morning, after a restful night at the amazing Brough Bed and Breakfast (aka: the house of our friend from college and her husband whom were amazing hosts), we were chauffeured into the city by our host, complete with a personal tour.

The day was a bit more brisk than I had anticipated and I was grateful to head indoors for our tour of the Library of Congress. After that, we got a hot dog and pretzel from a street vendor for lunch. Then, we went on a tour of the Capitol building. (FYI, no food or drink of any kind is allowed in the Capitol building so don't pack your yummy Costco chocolate chip cookies as a snack. Total bummer of a loss.)

Later, we attempted to get to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in time for a tour, but were bummed to find out the last tour is at 2pm and it was full (and they're only open Monday through Friday). After that, we walked past Washington Monument and then went to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. We had actually forgotten the stroller, so Brian and I were happy to sit down and rest - and not carry the kids - on the Metro ride back to the Brough B&B.

Outside the Library of Congress.

The Gershwin piano in the LOC.

An amazing mosaic in the LOC.

One of many "action" figures in the LOC gift shop.

The kids outside the Capitol. Sydney's way into sticking her tongue out (like a dog) for pictures.

Brian with Wes and Sydney.

The Capitol

During the Capitol tour. Sydney couldn't actually hear anything through her headphones because they were broken, but she liked them anyway.

Wes liked listening to the tour guide through the headphones and even followed directions (as demonstrated in this picture). :)

Brian's worth a lot! He's seeing how tall he is in stacked $100 bills at the gift shop in the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. If only they gave you that money...

Me with the kids and a view of Washington Monument.

We had someone take our family picture. I think she kind of missed the point of the picture (us with the monument). The bus is cool too, though. :)

Wes loved the Air and Space Museum. He and Sydney each took a turn flying the Cessna.

Wes liked this plane since his favorite color is (still) red. (Green comes in second now and yellow is third.)

Brian and the kids in front of the Spirit of St. Louis.

We took the Metro back to the Brough B&B and I coaxed Sydney to sleep (which wasn't hard) mostly because it's fun to have your kids sleep on you every so often. I just happened to blink at the moment the picture was taken...I'm not sleeping or even pretending to. :)

Interruption

I would like to interrupt the regularly scheduled blog posts to wish my hot husband a very happy 30th birthday!

Here are a few things I love about you. I love realizing that we are great for each other in so many ways. I love totally being able to read you, but also learning more about you all of the time. I love that you have to wear suits to work (lucky me!). I love having new experiences with you. I love watching you play with the kids and knowing how much you love being a dad. I love that you're goofy and a little bit weird while still being cool and socially aware. I love how you're loved by everyone that knows you. I love when I can see where pieces of your personality have come from. I love how much - and how fast - you read. I love how much you know. I love how much you love candy. I love how you want to be the best version of yourself. I love that I have never doubted your love for me. I love that you're mine.

Thanks for letting me celebrate five birthdays with you so far...to many more! I love you.

Weekend in D.C. - Thursday

On Thursday, October 21st, we woke up, ate breakfast, and then headed out for a long weekend in Washington, D.C. It's between a six and seven hour drive, which isn't too bad. On our way, we stopped in Richmond, Virginia (about four hours from Charlotte) to see my cousin Mary and her baby girl, Evee. It was perfect because we met them at Maymont, which is beautiful and was a great place for the kids to walk around. After some chatting, we got back in the car for the final two hour drive to the D.C. area.

Looking at the ducks and geese in the water.

Wes was really excited to "climb" this tree. He's actually just standing in the middle of the three trunks.

Walking in the Italian gardens. I love trellises.

Cute picture of the kids with the cool twisting tree trunk. We're getting asked more and more often if they're twins.

The beautiful waterfall. Yes, someone actually used to live on this property. Can you imagine?

Brian's such a great dad. Sydney always wants "horsey rides" and Wes always wants to hold his hand. He's so good to them!

We got some grain to feed the animals. Brian "lucked out" and got to be the feeder since the kids were too scared (of course).

Wes and Sydney loved meeting baby Evee.

My cousin, Mary, and me with our kiddos (who are 2nd cousins). Her husband, Brady, is in dental school in Richmond and was in class. It's so fun to see family since we often feel so far away out here on the east coast!

Pumpkin Picking

On Saturday, October 16th, Brian was out of town so I took the kids to the year-round farmers' market nearby so they could each pick out a pumpkin. After they picked out their little ones and we left, Wes decided he wanted to come back so Dad could pick out a big one for himself. Wes talked about it for the next few days until on Tuesday the 19th, we picked Brian up from work and headed over so he could pick out his very own Dad-sized pumpkin.

A picture from the first day I took the kids.

Wes showing his dad all of the big pumpkin options.

Wes looking for another good one.

Sydney with a medium sized pumpkin.

Hug the pumpkins!

And just in case you ever wondered what Sydney's tongue looked like...

This one's the winner!
