Charleston, SC

One of the perks of Brian working for a bank is that he gets random holidays off. Since he had Columbus Day off on Monday, we decided (the previous Wednesday) to drive down to Charleston, South Carolina.

We had to go to church on Sunday since we were both speaking in Sacrament Meeting and I had to teach my Sunbeams for the first time. After our ward missionary meeting (we're ward missionaries as well) right after church, we changed clothes (at the church, since it's 25 minutes from our house) and then headed south.

The drive is just under four hours, so we got to Charleston around 8pm. The kids took late naps in the car, so we didn't put them in their "beds" until after 9pm. Both of them wanted to sleep on the floor.

I think it was after 11pm before the kids finally went to sleep. Sydney ended up on the bed and Wes stayed on the floor.

On Monday morning, we took a ferry ride to Ft. Sumter. Since it was Columbus Day, we celebrated by having the kids wear these cool newspaper hats. I promise that Sydney does smile and is generally a happy girl. :)

The kids had fun during the half hour boat ride.

Me and Wes.

Checking out one of the many cannons on Ft. Sumter.

It's a little blurry, but you can see I'm about to get my head blown off. Interestingly, there was only one casualty at Ft. Sumter (also the first of the Civil War) during the 100-gun salute after the Confederates surrendered the fort.

Family picture with all of the flags.

A view from the boat of the Arthur Ravenel Bridge we drove over a few times. We saw a bunch of people run on there as well.

On a recommendation from our friends, we got Shrimp and Grits as well as Fish and Chips from an Irish pub in downtown Charleston. It was near Market Street where they used to sell slaves. It is now home to shops and people who sell things like woven baskets, toys, baseball cards, etc.

It was a hot day - in the 80s - so we drove over to Folly Beach. Wes associates the beach with Hawaii (even though he's never been there), so I thought it'd be fun for him to actually see a beach (that he could remember). Brian and the kids are pretending to be airplanes.

Great picture. I think it needs to become my new wallpaper. :)

Adios sandals!

Sydney didn't have much fear when it came to the water (unlike her older brother). I was more concerned she'd biff it and soak herself again like she did when we went to the waterfalls.

We played in the waves for a bit then we walked back to our car and got eaten alive by mosquitoes (all of us but Sydney, for some reason) and then drove home!

Sydney's 2nd Birthday Song

Grandma and Grandpa Hanks joined us via Internet for the birthday song and present opening.

It's the Sydney Mouse Clubhouse

Sydney turned two (only two?!?) on October 9th. We had a Mickey Mouse themed family birthday for her. She loved all the attention.

On our date to see Wall Street the previous night, Brian and I came across these Mickey Mouse Silly Bandz. We gave them to the kids in the morning to start off our fun Mickey Mouse day.

I ran (literally) to the grocery store to get syrup while Brian made Mickey Mouse pancakes.

For lunch, we went to Costco to get "hot-diggity-dogs". Then, we went home for nap/quiet time. (Wes couldn't sleep because he was too excited for Sydney to open her presents.) Sydney the Minnie Mouse was a bit grumpy when she got up from her nap! Eventually she loved wearing this headband though. (BTW, Brian did the bow.) :)

As I was cutting out the cake shape I kept singing, "M-I-C, K-E-Y, M-O-U-S-E" in my head. :)

The kids love playing with the characters now.

We probably should have waited for her to wake up a bit more before doing the singing.

I think she was mostly confused when we started having her open presents.

Wes with his homemade Mickey Mouse party hat.

Sydney started warming up to the idea of opening presents about halfway through. The cell phone from G&G Swensen was one of the first things she opened and she couldn't put it down the rest of the time.

Her present from us was a play kitchen (thanks to Craigslist, since we'll have to get rid of it when we move in 4 months).

Mom and daughter.

The kids played in the afternoon with all of Sydney's new things and then, for dinner, they had Mickey Mouse chicken nuggets.
